Becoming less = More to come

1 Timothy 4:6

“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

Does this make you think about the way you lead?

If it doesn’t, I think we miss the point.

In Matthew 3, we learn about John the Baptist and his call:

“A voice of the one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord”

That is exactly what John the Baptist did. He went preaching the Kingdom of Heaven is near and we need to repent and be baptized for our sins. I dont know if John the Baptist knew that Paul would write 1 Timothy 4:6, but in my eyes, John was aware that we needed to watch our doctrine and life closely.

There is goal that we as youth workers need to remember:

That God is more powerful, impacting and life changing that we will ever be!!

No matter how many critiques, no matter how much coffee we drink with a student, no matter how smart we become, God will overtake us. God will trump us. God will change the ones that we could never change.

That almost sounds like a call for us to not do anything. Because if God is the one that ultimately changes people’s hearts, then why are we here?

There is a calling for each of us.

John 3:30

” He must become greater, and I must become less.”

That is why we are here.

As youth workers we are called to prepare the way for God to come into the lives of students. We are called to set an example of what Christ calls us too. We are called to live a life that resembles Christ’s. We are called to bring students to a place that will allow them to meet and embrace God as their Heavenly father. We are called to preach the Kingdom of God is near. We are called to preach to students to repent and be baptized.

We are called to be Christ’s servants and Christ’s workers here on this earth.

As we become less and God becomes greater, there is nothing that God cannot accomplish.

I forget this a lot.

How do you prepare the way? What do you do to bring students to a life changing relationship with the God of the universe?
