25 Day Challenge……
So there is a story about Jesus being tempted in the dessert by the ‘tempter’. This is one of my favorite stories because it really shows the human side of who Jesus is. Although he is God’s son, there is no doubt in my mind that this tempting was some intense moments. We are told that Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, so he has to be feeling tired, thirsty, hungry, spent, but it is amazing to see what happens next.
The first temptation is all about food, the ‘tempter’ tell Jesus to turn some of these rocks that surrounded him into bread, since he was the son of God and all, he should be able to turn the rocks into whatever he wants.
Jesus answers: “It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
So how do we live on words?
As a youth worker, this is something that I have tried to think about over and over. I have heard many different ways, journals, teachings, small groups, forcing it down people’s throats. All sorts of stuff.
As someone that wants to help guide young people in a relationship with Jesus, this idea of living on the word of God is something that needs to be addressed.
We are getting ready to go on a winter retreat with our High schoolers here at Suncrest, and my good friend Wes and I have come up with a 25 day challenge to follow this teaching of living on the Word of God
James, 1 Peter and 2 Peter, just happen to add to 25 titles. We are going to challenge our high schoolers to read a heading a day from these three books. We made some bookmarks for all of the students and got them a journal to go with it.
My thoughts started to spin about how often is it that I read, or even journal to go along with it.
How do you spend your quiet time? Do you worry about doing everything correctly? Or do you think about whether or not you are getting to know your heavenly father?
25 days is basically a month, challenge yourselves to read every day for 25 days. I am going to see what God can teach me out of it, you never know, God works in ridiculous ways.
