Who is your Joshua?

So I have become a chosen leader in the church. Like most young leaders, expecially those in either children’s or youth ministries, dealing with people that are older than you is very intimidating. One thing that I struggle with is being able to stand up for myself when talking or dealing with someone that is older than I am.

1 Timothy 4:12 says: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love and in purity”

As a young leader, we are called to live lives above the normal. In Romans Paul also tells us to not live according the earthly world that we live in since we are called to a higher purpose. As a young leader, I do not have all of the experience in the world but I do know that I have been given the task of preaching and teaching God’s word to others in my life. That is something that is scarier than talking to people that are older than me. According to Paul in 1 Timothy however, we are called to not let our age become a factor in how we act in a leadership role.

After the Moses had passed away Joshua was chosen by God to take over the leadership of the Israelites. We dont know how Joshua reacted to this chosen responsibility but we do know that God lead him with some encouraging words:

Joshua 1:6-9:

6 “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Be strong and courageous, thats what God called Joshua to do. To lead God’s people and never worry knowing that God is leading him and knows the way.

Do we let God lead our path always?

What gets in the way of you being strong and courageous?

Why do we continue to let our age come between us and our calling?

I look up to Joshua, he had to follow the leadership of Moses. Thats a daunting task, but Joshua was able to follow God’s calling and lead the Israelites to the promise land. Joshua is an example to me about how we as young leaders need to heed the call of God and lead acording to our gifts and nothing else.
